Thymosin Alpha-1 (Tα1) is a synthetic 28-amino-acid polypeptide identical to the naturally occurring immunomodulating hormone isolated from the thymus gland. In laboratory settings, Thymosin Alpha-1 is studied for its ability to regulate the immune system by modulating dendritic cell function, promoting T-cell maturation and differentiation, and optimizing cytokine production. It serves as an investigative model for immune stimulation and inflammatory resolution.
Thymic immune factors were first identified in the mid-20th century as essential regulators of adaptive immunity. In 1977, Allan Goldstein and his research team isolated and sequenced Thymosin Alpha-1 from calf thymus tissue. Following its isolation, synthetic Tα1 (Thymalfasin) was engineered and clinical research expanded globally, resulting in its approval in over 30 countries as an adjuvant treatment for chronic viral hepatitis, immuno-oncology protocols, and vaccine responsiveness support.
